By Robert Montano Directed by Jessi D. Hill The Penguin Rep Theatre Production Steinbright Stage
Bullied for his size, a boy from Long Island finds purpose and respect atop a racehorse in this wild autobiographical ride,

written and performed by stage, film, and television star Robert Montano (Cats on Broadway, Barcelona at People’s Light). As the young jockey starts to literally outgrow his childhood dream, he resorts to more and more extreme measures to remain “small” before ultimately finding freedom in a new path. From Belmont Park to Broadway stages, Montano’s vivid and highly entertaining coming-of-age story explores the complex realities of pursuing a dream at all costs.

Recommended for ages 14+. Contains depictions of disordered eating and drug use.
Run time: Approximately 90 minutes with no intermission.

Individual Sponsors: Franny & Franny Abbott

What's the Buzz?
"Montano grips the audience from the first moment and takes us on a ride filled with raw emotion, brutal honesty and wonderfully charming humor."
  • Delco Culture Vultures: It’s the SMALL Things In Life—a new play at People’s Light

Throughout the piece, Montano rarely stops moving, running, jumping and striding around the stage as each character is fully displayed. Underlying all of this is his grace and precision as a dancer.  He beautifully creates the horses as he pantomimes stroking them; he makes you feel like you are actually watching a race as he crouches in a jockey position.  It is all perfectly realized.

  • Philadelphiatheaterarts: SMALL at People's Light

"This is no monologue delivered by an older actor behind a podium. This is a SHOW, featuring an astonishing actor-singer-dancer backed by an equally brilliant team of director, designers, and crew. It must be seen to be believed."
    —Neal Newman, Philadelphiatheaterarts
