Acting for the Camera

Saturday, March 29, 2:30–5:30pm

Led by Kim Carson
$75

Ever wondered what the difference is between training for theatre versus film? Dive into the nuanced world of acting for the camera with renowned actress, screenwriter and filmmaker Kim Carson. As the DeSales University Director of Education, and a People’s Light regular (Pantos including Alice in Wonderland and Cinderella; Plays including The Master Builder and more!) Kim has a wealth of experience acting both onstage and in front of the camera. The shift from stage acting to screen acting is one that requires subtlety, flexibility, and the ability to take direction and adapt to an imagined environment or scene partner during filming. Kim will guide students through the stages of preparation for a film role, help them analyze sides from popular tv shows and films, and help them calibrate their vocal techniques, physicality and facial expressions to render simple, powerful, believable performances suitable for television and film.

The Art of the Self-Tape

Saturday, April 12, 2:30–5:30pm

Led by Jessica Money
$75

Looking to nail your next filmed audition? In our field, actors often audition virtually by submitting a self-tape - whether that’s for an advanced acting class or college program, a regional production, or even a Broadway show. Want to crack the code to self-tapes without breaking the bank with fancy recording equipment, or second guessing all your artistic choices? This masterclass will equip you with the tools you need to successfully set up, film and deliver a quality audition that truly represents you. Barrymore-nominated actress Jessica Money (who will be starring as Audrey in our summer production of Little Shop of Horrorshelps teens build the skills every director is looking for, and examines the key elements that go into a strong self-tape. Discover techniques to present yourself as a confident, professional artist to make a great impression on your next artistic team. From preparing audition materials, to grounding yourself in proper vocal technique and bold acting choices, to nailing the essential framing, eyeline and diction skills needed for the camera, students will leave Jess’ class well equipped with the tools necessary to put their best foot forward.

*Students will be required to prepare sample audition material in advance for this class. We recommend bringing a 1-2 minute monologue and/or 16-32 bars of a song, memorized. For more information on how to prepare a song or monologue for this class, please visit our FAQ page or email Liz Filios, Director of Artist Training, at filios@peopleslight.org
