Beautiful Boy

By Pete Pryor

A Hatchling Production

Directed by Samantha Bellomo

May 30-June 24, 2012

Beautiful Boy is a play written by Associate Artistic Director Pete Pryor which explores the process of a father coming to terms with his son’s diagnosis of autism. It captures the frustration, anger, humor, and most of all love, experienced by ALL families.

People’s Light launched our “Hatchling Reading Series” this season to hear and discuss plays-in-progress by members of our Resident Company and local artistic community. A Hatchling Production takes the next step in this development process. This bare-bones staging of Beautiful Boy provides Pete Pryor the ability to explore his script in space with actors and designers. Each night, after the play, there will be an open discussion with the audience. This discussion will offer our audiences the opportunity to be part of a distinctive theatrical experience where their imagination, energy, and responses directly feed the early life of a new play.

"If this had been a 'regular' production in a 'regular' time slot in your schedule, it couldn't have been any more worthwhile. The actors were clearly deeply involved in their characters and worked with confidence and great skill. In the Q&A session after the performance, I couldn't shake the feeling that many audience members simply couldn't find the words to say 'Thank you for this beautiful experience.'"

"The blend of drama, humor and poetry is a brilliant wrapping around a story that is hard to tell. Expertly acted by a cast who made the audience share and feel the scenes that flow with energy, pace and impact."

"My wife and I have been season ticket holders for many years. Beautiful Boy is one of the most memorable plays that we've seen at People's Light. The acting was the highest quality and the play was very touching in the way it presented the sensitive subject of childhood illness."

"Truly a beautiful play. A learning experience."

"I know that [Beautiful Boy] was a substitute, but it was one of my favorites and touched me immensely. Awesome performance by the actors."

"...sad, funny, heart-wrenching dialogue all wrapped up in one script!"

"The actors were well-cast and handled challenging dialogue, characterizations and emotions. I have told all of my friends in the area to immediately see this play."

"I was impressed with the playwright's insights and ability to communicate so effectively in this way...making such personal experiences with disability so accessible to a broad segment of the community."
