Zak is a playwright, director, dramaturg, and producer with over twenty-years experience developing new work for the theatre. He joined People’s Light as Associate Artistic Director in September, 2011, and became Producing Director in 2013. Previously, he was Associate to Broadway producer Margo Lion, and Founding Executive Director of Artistic Programming with Epic Theatre Ensemble, an OBIE, Drama League, and Lucille Lortel Award-winning company in New York City. During his ten years of leadership, Epic gained a distinguished reputation for developing new work and cultivating diverse, new audiences. Zak has worked closely with many leading playwrights including Colman Domingo, Kate Fodor, Karen Hartman, Dominique Morisseau, Sarah Ruhl, Nilaja Sun, Vern Thiessen, Judith Thompson, and Bess Wohl. His own plays include The Harassment of Iris Malloy, Beauty on the Vine, Pieces of the Throne, and A Breath Short of Breathing. Iris received its World Premiere at People's Light and will next be produced at Detroit Public Theatre in spring 2017. Beauty on the Vine was produced in New York (starring Olivia Wilde and David Strathairn) and Chicago, published by Dramatist Play Service, and optioned by Dirty Rice Pictures to be turned into a film. Zak co-adapted Antigone and The Visit for Epic's nationally-recognized Arts-In-Education residencies that include the Coming Up Taller Award-winning Shakespeare Remix. He is also a former script writer for NBC's Days of our Lives. Zak writes for Howlround.com, including a series of the New Play Frontiers Residency and Commission program at People's Light. He is a married to Teri Lamm and they have two boys, Eliot and Theo.
