New Voices Ensemble
New Voices began in 1989 as an after-school initiative for students from the economically-disadvantaged city of Chester, PA. Over time, it evolved into an intensive ensemble program focused on art-making and personal and academic mentorship, fueled by long-term relationships among ensemble members and adult teaching artists.
Under the direction of New Voices alumnus Nadira Beard, the program currently serves 18 students ages 7-18. Ensemble members receive scholarships for the Theatre’s full range of activities for youth, transportation to and from those activities, and one-on-one mentorship throughout the school year.
Additionally this season, New Voices members in grades 6-12 will participate in an intensive, year-long, training and rehearsal process to create original theatre pieces. At season’s end, they will share their work with invited audiences in the city of Chester and at People’s Light.
